Coventry

As the eleventh biggest city in the UK with a population in excess of 300,000 people, Coventry has gained a reputation for excellence in the fields of watch making and ribbon making.  It is also known for its three beautiful spires that pierce the skyline and yet for many people it is a city that is yet to be discovered. Set amid the stunning Warwickshire landscape, the city of Coventry has much to offer. From the numerous free attractions that appeal to families of all ages to the attractions that speak of the history and culture of the place, there really is something for everyone to enjoy here, even if the highlight of your trip is a viewing of the Lady Godiva statue, who sits in all her glory atop a horse in honour of her ride through the streets of the city.

Coventry Cathedral

Coventry Cathedral is in fact not one but two buildings, one being nothing but the ruins of the original medieval church that once stood on the site, which was ordained to be the site of the building of the new cathedral in 1918; sadly within a mere twenty years this new cathedral was devastated by enemy bombs during an air raid over the city. Unlike most cities where such devastation has occurred, the ruins of the buildings were not cleared away, instead they were left in situ as a reminder of the devastation that war brings. Since the bombing and the rebuilding the site has become dedicated as a ministry of peace, sending forth messages of love and reconciliation that have been recognised around the world.

Places to See

While you are here make a point of visiting the Herbert Art Gallery – within it you will find exhibitions that illustrate not only the social history of the city but also its industrial heritage. The gallery is very much a part of the community here and is a valuable learning resource as well as visitor attraction. Perhaps one of the most iconic buildings in the city is the Belgrade Theatre and is the location of many fabulous performances across the year. One of the best places to go to enjoy a day out while you are here has to be the Coombe Country Park, a picnic by the lakeside or a walk through the woodlands or incredible landscape gardens could be just what you need to start the relaxation process.

Things To Do

Pay a visit to Arbury Hall, a beautiful Gothic mansion which was constructed upon the remains of other ancient buildings – there are beautiful gardens and a wonderful park to enjoy and the house itself is filled with period furniture and a wonderful collection of porcelain. If cars are your thing, then head to the Heritage Motor Centre where there are more than 180 different vehicles on display from classic and vintage machines through to modern vehicles, plus there is go karting and an adventure playground to enjoy, so that the kids can be thoroughly entertained too.
